![]() ![]() Course History and Description: Aside from its interesting and challenging 18-hole layout, Montebello Golf Course is best known for its remarkable heritage. Designed by Stanley Thompson in 1929 and opened in 1931, Montebello remained the private golf course of the prestigious Seigniory Club until 1970 when it joined Canadian Pacific Hotels and opened its doors to the public. The course is part of a scenic 65,000-acre estate lying on the north shore of the Ottawa River between Montreal and Ottawa. Resting on the lower slopes of the Westcott Mountain, many of its holes were actually carved out of granite rock. In 1989, Canadian Pacific Hotels commissioned golf course architect John Watson, a past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, to oversee a complete renovation of the course. This included the installation of several new fairway bunkers and a slight redesign of several holes in order to lengthen the course and help adjust to the increased play of the modern era. It also brought some of the green-sites more into keeping with the mountain flavor of the course. The work was completed in time for play in 1991. This wonderful course winds tightly through graceful forests and features dramatic elevation changes, captivating the imagination of golfers from all over the world. Some of its elevated tees provide lovely views of the gentle rolls of the surrounding mountains. Unlike most new layouts today, each hole at Montebello seems secluded, providing that lovely closed-in feeling, like your group is the only one on the course. In 1998, Montebello was ranked as the 2nd Best Public Course in Quebec and more recently was awarded the prestigious Double Platinum Award by Canada's Golf Ranking Magazine. In 2001 Fairmont le Chateau Montebello Golf Course was designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System of Canada (A.C.S.S.C.), as part of an international program designed to help landowners preserve and enhance the environmental quality of their property. In 2003, the readers of Travel and Leisure Golf ranked Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello among the Top 5 Best Golf Resorts in Canada. Golf Packages: Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello golf packages are ideal for the avid golfers. While appreciating the rustic charm of the historic cedar log château, comfortable lodging and friendly hospitality, the wonderful course will lead you through graceful forests and features of dramatic elevation changes captivating the imagination of any enthusiastic golfer. The dream of Swiss-American Harold Saddlemire, who dubbed it 'Lucerne-in-Quebec,' Fairmont Le Château Montebello was inspired by the châteaux of the Swiss Alps. Craftsmen used 10,000 giant cedar logs to build the resort's three main buildings, all cut and set by hand. The central log château, which houses all 231 of the guest rooms in the resort, has a three-story central atrium, at the heart of which stands a massive six-sided fireplace with a central chimney.
