![]() Course History: Le Meridien Penina Golf & Resort, set in its own picturesque 360-acre estate, offers three golf courses, an 18-hole Championship Course, a 9-hole Academy Course and a 9-hole Resort Course. The Championship Course, the first to be built in the Algarve, was designed in 1966 by the late Sir Henry Cotton, three-time British Open Champion, and is considered his masterpiece and it is indeed a remarkable achievement. The hotel and golf club are unique when it comes to outstanding views, also a calm and tranquil setting. The experienced Cotton was one of the firsts to recognize the Algarve's huge potential as a golfing destination. The quality and the success of his work encouraged the subsequent construction of many other courses that now exist in the region. Prestigious events such as the Daily Telegraph Seniors’ Matchplay Event (2000/2001), the National finals of the Audi Cup, together with major International and Charity competitions including the Sir Henry Cotton Team Trophy and Sir Henry Cooper Charity Classic – in November and May, respectively; together with the Portuguese Algarve Open in 2000/2004 and 2006 have all been hosted at this well known venue. Course Description: The Championship Course is one of the longest and most difficult in Portugal. The fairways are wide, but lined with towering pines and massive eucalyptus trees that give the course a character entirely its own. Numerous lakes, channels and bunkers make it a game of precision. Golfers who avoid these hazards are rewarded with shots to large greens without severe contours. The course is also characterized by an unusual grouping of the par-5’s, with four of the five arranged together in pairs at the beginning and end of the back nine producing a par of 38 as opposed to 35 for the front nine. As you turn home up the par-5, 436-meter 18th, the magnificent building of the Hotel acts as a backdrop to the green framed in the rear by an amphitheatre of trees – a superb spectator setting! Drive short of the drainage pitch, position the second shot to avoid the bunkers guarding the putting surface and take into account the pin position on one of the three tiers of the green for the approach and you could well finish with a commendable par! Of the par-3’s, the most memorable is the Signature par-3, 185 meter 13th hole – voted one of the best 500 holes in the world! The hole presents its own, unique challenge. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tees, while the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of bunkers. The resort also encompasses two 9-hole facilities – the “Academy”, which winds its way between the holes of the Championship Course; and the “Resort”, to the far side of the Hotel – opportunities to fine tune one’s short game, while providing gentle training grounds for beginners. The Le Meridien Penina Golf & Resort has gained recognition by and is a member of the Audobon Cooperative Sanctuary System, dedicated to protection of wildlife. Championship Course
