Course Notes A course designed by Robert Trent Jones II (RTJ2) needs no further introduction, and yet The Marshes merits a few extra words. This grand work was the final design collaboration between father and son prior to the passing of Robert Trent Jones Senior. The Marshes is a fitting tribute to a distinguished golf craftsman—a man responsible for some of the world's finest courses. Of note is RTJ2's respect for the The Marshes' ecosystem. The natural wetland habitat has been carefully preserved—and cleverly enhanced—and is home to a variety of migratory bird species. The design team worked closely with the Audubon Society to create a golf facility that exceeds the standards set out by the Audubon Co-operative Sanctuary Systems of Canada. A challenging location According to RTJ2 President and Chief Design Officer Bruce Charleston, The Marshes presented a number of design challenges, including location and terrain. Considerable sculpting was required to create the gently rolling, rocky and tree-studded landscape found on holes one through six. Holes seven to 11 and 16 through 18 inspired the name of this championship layout, as water predominates. The Marshes unique location—in the heart of a thriving corporate business park—also raised a few design-team eyebrows. Skeptical at first, the RTJ2 team soon found harmony in the arrangement. The imposing contemporary architecture of major corporate towers is stunningly offset by the meandering fairways that weave between them. In the distance, the Gatineau Hills provide the finishing touch—a spectacular background to this sprawling golf facility. A thinking-golfer's course With as many as four tee decks per hole, The Marshes' bent-grass fairways and greens will challenge and reward golfers of every calibre. RTJ2 recognized that the landscape presented a number of tight nooks and crannies that were ideally suited to par threes. As a result, The Marshes features a somewhat unusual balance—six par-threes, six par-fours, and six par-five holes. And while two of the par fours—seven and 13—are short, players shouldn't be lured into thinking they can leave their drivers in their bag for the rest of their rounds. Witness the par-five second hole, which, after the relative ease of number one, delivers a wake-up call with a pin that's a distant 565 yards—612 yards—from the tee. In planning the layout, Charleston and his team wanted to make the most of The Marshes sprawling 195-acre footprint. They opted to create a track in which the playing area is as much as 20 percent greater than average. The result is a 7,200-yard par-72 layout course that brings shot-making to the forefront. There's more than one way to play The Marshes—the wide fairways offer incredible flexibility for tee and fairway shots alike. The course requires intelligent strategies at every turn—truly the mark of a classic golf course.
