![]() ![]() Course History and Description: “Voted Best Golf Resort 2005” at the World Travel Awards, London. The Old Course at Bovey Castle is a challenging and beautiful championship golf course, designed in 1926 by JF Abercromby, one of the famous British golf course designers of the Golden Era. In 2003 the course was carefully restored and updated under the creative eye of renowned Scottish architects, Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie, and it is recognized as one of southwest England's finest inland layouts. Designed to rival its sister courses at Gleneagles and Turnberry, this course has been described as an experience of golf never to be forgotten. With tree lined fairways and superb small greens as well as the rivers Bovey and Bowden consistently coming into play, the course offers a true challenge to all levels of players. There are many memorable holes not least the 7th which one of the greatest English golfers and three-time British Open winner Henry Cotton said "is possibly the best par 4 in British in-land golf." Bovey Castle is a deluxe golf and sporting resort located in the heart of Dartmoor National Park. Originally built as a private home and sporting estate the Castle exudes the elegance, luxury and excitement of the 1920's. No expense was spared in either the scale or the quality of craftsmanship, creating an exceptional country home with grand oak paneled drawing rooms, large open fire-places, ornate broad stairways and magnificent oak paneled Great Hall, all opening onto the stone balustraded garden terraces. Enhanced by exceptional levels of comfort and friendly service, sets this experience apart from any other; a touch of Agatha Christie, the Orient Express and Hercule Poirot! Many of the castles in Devon and Cornwall were built in times of threatened invasions: the earliest include Tintagel, the birthplace of King Arthur, and not very far from Bovey Castle is perhaps the most haunted Castle in England! Golf Packages: We are also delighted to offer Cardmembers the opportunity to enjoy the luxurious facilities at the Castle and several rounds of golf when they book a golf package.
