![]() Course Description: St Andrews Links is the Home of Golf, its cultural home, the Mecca to which every golfer aspires to make a pilgrimage to at least once in his or her golfing life where the game evolved and where the spirit and traditions of golf have been safeguarded for over six centuries. The six courses at the Links are managed by St Andrews Links Trust. The Old Course is unique among the world's great golf courses. From the nerve racking 1st tee shot, you take up the challenge that has humbled so many of the world's top golfers. The Old Course is unique in that it owes little to the hand of man in its design and layout. To stand on the 1st tee immediately in front of the Royal & Ancient clubhouse is to stand on the most inviting fairway in the game of golf. The course has wide fairways with little elevation and interrupted at intervals by huge double greens. There are only four single greens on the Old Course, the 1st, 9th, the famous 17th Road hole, and the Home hole, the 18th. This course is full of tradition and history with features such as the Swilken Burn, the Road hole and the Hell bunker. Twenty-four British Opens along with the prestigious Dunhill Cup have been hosted by the Old Course. Course History: The Old Course originally consisted of twenty-two holes, eleven out and eleven back. On completing a hole, the player teed up his ball within two club lengths of the previous hole, using a handful of sand scooped out from the hole to form a tee. In 1764, the Society of St Andrews Golfers, which later became the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, decided that some holes were too short and combined them. This reduced the course to eighteen holes and created what became the standard round of golf throughout the world.
