Course History:
Set in 12,000 acres of rolling Sussex Downland, Goodwood has long been famous for both its natural beauty and its legendary hospitality. Goodwood boasts some of the greatest views in golf. It is recognized as the finest downland golf course in Britian.

Golf at the Goodwood Club dates back more than a century, when in 1901, the Duke of Richmond gave permission to play on a superb course laid out by champion golfer and eminent designer, James Braid. In 2004 the historic course was sensitively restored and re-modeled to exceed the expectations of today’s golfers. In the 21st century, the genius of Braid is undiminished, as golfers continue to enjoy the beauty and challenges of this great historic course, with its magnificent 18th century Clubhouse.

Featured Hole Descriptions:
Hole 2, Par-4, 390 Yards: The second is a spectacular hole – a combination of two of James Braid’s original holes. The impressive nature of the hole is enhanced with three bunkers protecting the green and a large, wide landing area framed with bunkering both left and right. It requires a carefully placed drive to the top of the escarpment giving spectacular views down the valley, before your second shot is launched to a large accommodating green.

Hole 6, Par-4, 328 Yards: Redesigned into a reachable par 4 for the better golfers. Set high above the valley, the tees offer a remarkable panorama of the coast, the city and the cathedral – a few minutes savoring is called for. A well placed drive, slightly right of center will put the player in good stead for the approach shot into this tricky green as anything but a perfectly struck pitch will run away to the back of the putting surface.

Hole 7, Par 4, 465 Yards: Climbing out of the valley, the old 7th, a fine long par four is probably James Braid’s finest example of the dogleg on a downland course. The demanding second shot is invariably against the prevailing elements to reach this small, subtly defended green with magnificent southerly views toward the coast, Chichester Harbour and the cathedral spire.

Hole 12, Par 3, 159 Yards: The glorious 12th is perhaps the most classical Braid par 3 hole on the course. With 160 yards of all-carry from the three tees over the historic buried fortress moat, to the undulating putting surface, the hole is large, spacious, enticing and accommodating, but framed entirely by bunkering. This is a well-sheltered tee so elect to strike a firm low-flighted shot to avoid your ball being abandoned to the wind.

Hole 16, Par-5, 600 Yards: The longest and most challenging of the par fives, the 16th winds downhill with fine views to the south-east over Goodwood House.

Hole 17, Par-3, 203 Yards: Additional impact has been given to what may well be the ‘Waterloo’ of many players’ rounds with an extension of the water and rebunkering of the green. A hand-crafted wall of Sussex flint guards the right greenside carry. A teasing, rolling, deceiving green.

Hole 18, Par-4, 467 Yards: The home hole has always been an impressive one. Majestic, challenging and beautifully framed by the trees on each side, every player has the chance to finish the round memorably, successfully and enjoyably with a par, given long and true hitting.

The Goodwood Estate:
The home of the Dukes of Richmond for over 300 years, Goodwood House, designed by James Wyatt, contains one of the finest collections of English paintings and French porcelain and furniture in England.

Goodwood enjoys an exceptional variety and unique mixture of activities in addition to golf ranging from horseracing, motor racing, flying and shooting. Stylish accommodations are available at The Goodwood Park Hotel.

The first private horse race at Goodwood took place in 1801. Today, over 200 years later, the Racecourse hosts 20 days of top class racing and entertainment from May to September each year. The culmination and climax of the English summer season is the five-day Festival meeting known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’, usually held at the end of July, which combines competitive and thrilling racing with fashion and style, and is very much the place to be and be seen.

The annual Goodwood Festival of Speed has established itself as the world's biggest celebration of the motor car. With 158,000 visitors attending the event, the Festival, which takes place in the beautiful parkland surroundings in front of Goodwood House attracts unique cars and legendary drivers from all over the world.

The Goodwood Revival, held in September, represents a magical step back in time to the romance and glamour of motor racing as it used to be, and is widely regarded as the greatest historic motor racing event in the world. Just under 100,000 visitors close the door to the modern world for three days to experience the great old days of motor racing in dramatic and theatrical style.

The Goodwood Aerodrome, a former WWII fighter station, is one of the busiest general aviation airfields in the South of England.
