![]() ![]() Course History & Course Description: Sunningdale Golf Club is blessed with two championship courses laid out on the most glorious piece of heathland. The courses wind their way through heather, gorse and pine with 36 holes, each one of which has its own individual characteristics but form a perfectly matched 36 holes. The Old Course, founded in 1900 and designed by Willie Park, is the more famous of the two, but only acquired the title of Old when the New Course, designed by Harry Colt, was opened in 1923. The Old Course, with 103 bunkers, has pine, birch and oak lining the heather culminating with the famous 18th hole and the final green below the ‘Sunningdale Oak Tree’. Major Championships have been staged in every decade of Sunningdale’s history and its Champions include James Braid, Harry Varden, Bobby Jones, Max Faulkner, Bobby Locke, Peter Thomson, Kel Nagle, Bob Charles, Gary Player, Ian Woosnam, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Bernhard Langer. Lady winners include Judy Rankin, Nancy Lopez, Si Re Pak, Karrie Webb and Annika Sorenstam. Overseas golfers have found their way to Sunningdale almost since the opening of the Old Course and none with more style than Bobby Jones. In 1926, playing in a qualifying round for the British Open Championship which he went onto win at Royal Lytham and St. Annes, Bobby Jones went around the Old Course in 66. Regarded for many years as the ‘perfect round’, 33 shots, 33 putts, no hole was played in more than four and on ten holes the shot to the green was played with a two iron or wood. More recently in 1992 Nick Faldo added the European Open at Sunningdale to the Open Championship he had won in Muirfield. In 1997 Karrie Webb won the Women's British Open Championship in majestic style, heading a world class field by eight shots.
