Course History:

Founded in 1903, the Walton Heath courses were designed by Herbert Fowler, a leading amateur golfer and designer who worked in both the British Isles and United States. It is a tribute to his genius that between 1902 and 1904, he created one of the finest examples of heathland golf out of a jungle of heather, gorse and bracken that the Heath was then. It is a testament to his creativity that the Old Course is, still to this day, ranked as one of the top 100 courses in the World.

Opened for play in 1904, with an exhibition match between the legendary Triumvirate of Vardon, Taylor and Braid - the Old was soon followed by the New Course in 1907. Among Walton Heath’s men’s captains was the Prince of Wales, who later became King Edward VIII. The membership boasts many familiar names from British government: David Lloyd George and Sir Winston Churchill, as well as familiar golf names such as James Braid, the club’s first professional. Uniquely, in its first 100 years, Walton Heath has only had three professionals – Braid, Harry Busson and Ken Macpherson.

Host to over 60 major amateur and professional championships in its illustrious history, the courses have been graced by the 1981 Ryder Cup, 5 European Open Tournaments, 23 "News of the World" Match Play Championships, spanning some 65 years, as well as numerous prestigious amateur events. The Signature Holes:
New Course Hole 5: Par 4, 422 Yards (Men’s)
Possibly Walton Heath's best hole and being slightly downhill and often downwind, one to enjoy. Not a slicers paradise, anything but the widest of greens, and #1 handicap ranking, hardly a birdie opportunity, but always a wonderful challenge.

New Course Hole 6: Par 3, 163 Yards (Men’s)
Playing uphill prevents this hole's characteristics from being fully appreciated. Many course architects consider it to be Walton Heath's best short hole despite it being one of the shortest ones. Into the prevailing wind can add 2 clubs or more to its length - a classic short hole.

New Course Hole 11: Par 4, 374 Yards (Men’s)
Not much fun for the short slicer off the tee, but a wide target for others. The cavernous bunker on the front left of the green attracts numerous balls into its heathery face - avoid this area at all costs.

New Course Hole 12: Par 4, 411 Yards (Men’s)
Carry the heather faced bunker from the tee and a generous width fairway lies beyond. Underclubbing on the deceptive length shot to the green will often result in the most difficult of bunker shots. Into the prevailing wind and at 485 yards from the championship tee, this hole requires two long shots to reach the green.

New Course Hole 14: Par 4, 400 Yards (Men’s)
Driving to a blind fairway adds to the difficulty on this hole. Take aim on the two dark green pine trees if you are a modest hitter and the left one if you are feeling strong. The hollow in front of this green foreshortens the second shot and an additinal club is required. The #2 handicap ranking suggests a hole of the highest quality which this one certainly is.

New Course Hole 18: Par 4, 355 Yards (Men’s)
The one hole on the New (1907) course where you want your longest drive. Anything lacking in length will result in the second shot being laid up short of the wide deep bunker in front of the green. If the bunker cannot be carried with confidence, play short of it or risk the consequences of the toughest of bunker shots to a two tiered green, with hazards beyond.

In the overseas qualifying for the 2005 U.S. Open, Michael Campbell holed a 9 foot putt to birdie this hole and qualify. The following week, he became the U.S. Open Champion.
