![]() Course History and Description: The Lakemont golf course was built in two phases beginning in 1988. John LaFoy designed the layout with the front 9 holes played around Stone Mountain Lake. Incredible views of the World's largest Exposed Granite mountain along with the famous Confederate Memorial carving featuring Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson on horseback makes the front nine a memorable experience. Six holes have water in play making it not only spectacular, but a strong test of accuracy. Signature holes on the front side include #1, a double dogleg par 5 over water and around a granite outcropping and #3, a medium length par 4. The 6th hole, a former short dogleg par 4, was renovated in 2000 and shortened to a beautiful par 3 over water and is noted as well. The backside of Lakemont offers several interesting and beautiful holes, as well. Although this side is more inland, away from the lake and Stone Mountain, it is as difficult and scenic as the front. Several holes have rock outcroppings and 4 of the holes have water that does come into play. LaFoy's penchant for mounding and dramatic bunkering is also evident throughout the backside. Golf Travel Packages: “Stay and Play” golf packages are available at the Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort and Stone Mountain Inn. Featured Hole Descriptions: Lakemont #1, Par 5, 536-yards/Blue Tees; 507-yards/White Tees (Hdcp. 1) The double dogleg par 5 opening hole is Lakemont's signature hole. Nothing quickens the pulse more than an opening tee shot over water. From the Championship tee, a drive carrying 200 yards is required. Stone Mountain lake borders the entire left side of the hole and provides a scenic distraction only bettered by the incredible view of Stone Mountain and the Memorial carving looming in the background as you hit your approach shot into the green. Lakemont #3, Par 4, 408-yards/Blue Tees; 390-yards/White Tees (Hdcp. 7) One of the more scenic holes on the Lakemont course is #3. This straightaway par 4 plays directly toward Stone Mountain and the historic Confederate carving. Don't be distracted by the view or the paddleboat going by however, as the approach shot is to a green nearly completely surrounded by water. Lakemont #5, Par 4, 350-yards/Blue Tees; 325-yards/White Tees (Hdcp. 15) Hole #5 starts out with a downhill drive toward Stone Mountain and the lake. A driver is not really required, but position is. The hole takes an abrupt turn right and parallels the lake for a short, but beautiful approach shot to a fairly large, well-bunkered green. Lakemont #6, Par 3, 221-yards/Blue Tees; 195-yards/White Tees (Hdcp. 5) Lakemont #6 is a former short par 4 renovated into a gorgeous, but treacherous par 3 over water in 2000. A tree covered granite outcropping catches shots to the right while the Stone Mountain lake guards the front and entire left side and behind. The green is deceivingly deep and will hold long iron and wood shots. This hole will certainly get your blood pumping! Lakemont #7, Par 4, 407-yards/Blue Tees; 375-yards/White Tees (Hdcp. 9) A reprieve from water awaits at hole #7. This is a fairly straight forward par 4 of medium length, but requires precision off the tee. A large fairway bunker guards the right side and pine trees line the left. The green is two-tiered and can cause some consternation. A lone green-side bunker guards the front right. Lakemont #9, Par 5, 510-yards/Blue Tees; 500-yards/White Tees (Hdcp. 3) The other par 5 on the front side is #9. This roller-coaster hole requires a very accurate tee-shot that, if placed at the end of the fairway, leaves a possible 2nd shot into a two-tiered green. The elevated landing area provides a perfect view of the fairway below and the dangers that await a misplayed 2nd shot. Two greenside bunkers pinch the front entrance to the green. Lakemont #11, Par 4, 322-yards/Blue Tees; 300-yards/White Tees (Hdcp. 6) One of the most talked about holes is the spectacular #11. This short, dogleg right par 4 plays to a two-tiered fairway, short of an old granite quarry, that is now used as an irrigation pond. The green sits below the level of the fairway at the ponds far edge some 15 feet below the rim of the quarry. The hole is short enough to tempt the long hitters to go for the green in one, but the risk-reward percentage will dictate taking the safe route with perhaps an iron off the tee to just inside the 150 yard marker. There is a very large oak tree that guards the left hand side of the driving area forcing tee shots toward the quarry, so beware!
