![]() Golf Digest ranks Purgatory as one of "America's 50 Toughest Golf Courses" for 2007. Purgatory recently made the prestigious list of toughest courses, ranking number 25. Here's what Golf Digest had to say;"Who knew? Turns out hell's waiting room has 133 bunkers, knee-high rough and only three par 4s less than 450 yards. The unlucky 13th is a 741-yard par 5. Devilish." Purgatory Golf Club is a resort quality golf course in Noblesville, Indiana, just north of Indianapolis. There are a minimum of six tees on each hole, so the course tempts golfers of all skill levels. When played from the front tees at only 4,400 yards, Purgatory is one of the shortest courses in Indiana. When played from the back tees at over 7,700 yards, Purgatory is the longest golf course in Indiana. Bent grass covers the course from tee to green. Tall fescue grasses offer contrast, beauty, and a playing challenge. One of the club's defining features is the bunkering. There are over 125 bunkers on the course. These bunkers define the holes visually and outline many of the fairways. Honors the course has received: • #1 course in the state, Golf Week Magazine • Best courses in state, Golf Digest Magazine • America's 100 Greatest Public Courses by Golf Digest Magazine • Top 50 Courses for Women by Golf For Women Magazine 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 • Best place to take out-of-towners, Indianapolis Monthly Magazine • Top 10 courses in the state of Indiana, Golf Digest • Best of the Best, Best Value (under $70), Golf For Women Magazine • Indiana's Best Golf, readers pick their favorite 18 courses, Indiana Business Magazine • Top 25 courses in the Midwest, Great Lakes Golf Magazine Noteworthy Holes: 5th Hole, The Centaur: The straight par 5 has trees to the left, and a large fairway bunker on the right. This bunker will come into play with a less than perfect tee shot. This hole ranges from 367 yards short to 551 yards long. Water comes in to play the last 140 yards along the right side of the fairway and green. The hole can be reached with two excellent shots leaving a possibility birdie on this hole. 9th Hole, St. Patrick: The finishing hole on the front side is a challenging par 5 which is played slightly uphill and into the prevailing winds. Your second shot must be placed in a well-bunkered area to have a short or lofted iron into the well-bunkered, slightly elevated green. 13th Hole, Everlasting Torment: This hole features one of the longest par 5’s you’ll ever play. It ranges from 358 yards at the front to 735 yards from the back. Elevated tees and the wind at your back helps shorten this hole. The fairway is bunkered on both sides and challenges you to hit long and straight shots. The undulated and sloping green is a difficult target. 16th Hole, Blinding Cloud of Smoke: The sixteenth hole is named Blinding Cloud of Smoke. The hole is completely lined with bunkers. When you get to the green and look back towards the tees, the bunkers disappear, just like smoke. 18th Hole, The Gryphon: This finishing par 5 hole ranges from 385 yards at the front tees to 521 yards at the back tees. It offers a choice with a double fairway from the tee shot, and an excellent chance to finish with a birdie. The hole can even be reached in two shots making it an eagle. The fairway is well-guarded by sand bunkers left, right, and center. The green has large bunkers front left and right as well as behind the putting surface.
