![]() ![]() Course History: Stonemont, the original 18 hole layout, was designed and built in 1969 by the Father of Modern Golf Architecture, Robert Trent Jones Sr. With his passing in June of 2000, Stonemont will remain the only Jones Sr. designed course, open to the public, in the State of Georgia. His masterpiece was built in a setting "so magical that it truly seemed as though God, Himself, had created (it) with a golf course in mind," as Jones noted in 1999, in a letter to Stone Mountain Golf Club commemorating the restoration of his layout. Stonemont is laid out over gently rolling and cantered fairways of premier Bermuda grass and greens of immaculate bent grass. The par 70 layout stretches 6845 yards making it not only long, but brutish at times with its narrow fairways, strategically placed bunkers and numerous stands of Georgia pines. Additionally, on the front side there are several nearly-hidden creeks and drainways challenging even the straightest of drivers. Even more diabolical is the way Jones used the natural slope and contour of the land to increase the difficulty of shots not played to the correct areas. These subtle contours often play mind games with the golfer whether he stands on the tee or in the fairway, making the mental approach to playing Stonemont of utmost importance. The backside is a very scenic and well-paced 9 holes that test every facet of one's game. Par is an excellent adversary on Stonemont as every hole presents a unique and calculated challenge sure to leave one thirsting for revenge. The golf shop is a perennial “Top 100 Golf Shop in America” and contains all the latest equipment and fashion attire. With complete practice facilities, a spectacular restaurant, meeting rooms and two 4-star lodging partners, this Marriott facility is a perfect choice for any size group or outing. Golf Travel Packages: “Stay and Play” golf packages are available at the Evergreen Marriott Conference Resort and Stone Mountain Inn. Featured Hole Descriptions: Stonemont #1, Par 4, 451-yards/Black Tees; 435-yards/Blue Tees (Hdcp. 1) Rated the most difficult starting hole in Georgia, Stonemont #1 is long, narrow and unlevel all the way to a large elevated green. The tee shot should be fed down the left side to allow for the natural run to the right. The approach to the green will be more than likely from a stance with the ball below the feet. This condition should dictate a controlled fade, but two very tall pine trees guard the entrance from the left. Even with the absence of bunkering this hole is a beast! Stonemont #3, Par 5, 533-yards/Black Tees; 491-yards/Blue Tees (Hdcp. 11) The lone par 5 on the front side of Stonemont is a genuine birdie hole, but only if the trees bordering both sides of the fairway can be avoided. From an elevated tee, this downhill, dogleg left hole entices the long hitter to cut the corner. If done successfully, the green is reachable in two. A cavernous bunker gobbles up short right shots and the green has just enough slope from left to right and back to front to cause considerable havoc once the green is reached. Stonemont #6, Par 3, 230-yards/Black Tees; 210-yards/Blue Tees (Hdcp. 13) Hole #6 is the toughest par 3 on the Stonemont golf course. It plays every bit of it's length and requires an extremely accurate tee shot to even access the green. Bunkers on either side pinch the front of the green making it nearly impossible to run the tee shot onto the putting surface. A severe back to front and right to left tilt to the green makes putting from the high side of the hole an absolute adventure. Par on this hole is definitely something to cheer about! Stonemont #9, Par 4, 439-yards/Black Tees; 404-yards/Blue Tees (Hdcp. 7) Hole #9 is by far the most talked about hole on the Stonemont course. This 90 degree right angle dogleg par 4 requires a well placed tee shot to a downhill, left to right sloping fairway. Both sides are tree lined and placement is extremely important as the green and flagstick location come into view. The approach shot from this awkward lie is back up to a plateau green that is protected in front by a very deep faced bunker. Stonemont #11, Par 4, 418-yards/Black Tees; 400-yards/Blue Tees (Hdcp. 2) Hole #11 is one of the most difficult holes on the entire Stonemont course. Rated only behind the first hole in difficulty, the tee shot must be played through a chute of trees to a fairway that is slightly uphill and fairly narrow. The entire hole plays longer than the yardage due to this slope and the second shot must clear a small waterway that runs diagonally in front of the green then winds down the left side of the fairway and into the pond at #10. The green is on a plateau and is guarded by a bunker in the back and grassy moguls on the left. Stonemont #13, Par 4, 417-yards/Black Tees; 400-yards/Blue Tees (Hdcp. 4) Hole #13 is nearly identical in length to #11, but plays usually 1-2 clubs shorter as the green sits below the level of the landing area for tee shots. A long fairway bunker protects the right side and a very large oak tree protects the left. Pine trees line both sides of the medium wide fairway as well, causing consternation for wayward tee shots. The green is two-tiered, kidney shaped and protected both front and back by deep faced bunkers. Stonemont #14, Par 3, 423-yards/Black Tees; 409-yards/Blue Tees (Hdcp. 8) Hole #14 is one of the most beautiful holes on the course. The tee shot plays slightly uphill on this dogleg right par 4 to a fairly wide fairway lined by tall pines. The approach shot is downhill and slightly to the right to a large undulating green that is surrounded by bunkers front right and left and trees to the rear. Stonemont #16, Par 3, 188-yards/Black Tees; 180-yards/Blue Tees (Hdcp. 16) Hole #16 is a gorgeous, slightly downhill par 3 that plays straight toward Stone Mountain and the Historic Confederate Memorial carving. Beyond the distractions, the hole plays very tough in that a large, deep face bunker guards the front of the hourglass shaped green while a pot bunker is situated in the back. A hump in the middle of the green plays havoc with putts that are situated on the opposite side of the pin and the depth of the green is only 19 yards - 10 yards at it's narrowest!
