![]() Located two miles from the Pacific Ocean on California's Central Coast 70 miles north of Santa Barbara in Nipomo, this new course opened January 1, 2006. Monarch Dunes is a tribute to the origins and tradition of golf. Surrounded by windswept dunes and eucalyptus trees, coastal vistas and amber-colored hillsides, Monarch Dunes Golf Club is reminiscent of the true links-style courses found in Scotland and a "must-play" for those who seek a challenging, yet amiable, unspoiled golf adventure. Journey through California’s coastal highlands and discover the evolving conditions and natural beauty that inspire an unforgettable golf experience... one that calls you back time and again. The clubhouse is full-service, featuring a full breakfast and lunch menu as well as a bar. The restaurant’s saw tooth cut redwood deck cantilevers out over the landscaped hill, overlooking the #1 tee box #9 green and the 3 acre lake that divides the two holes. The golf shop is well stocked featuring apparel, accessories and clubs for testing or purchase. Course Description: Monarch Dunes (35-36--71) features five par 3s, four par 5s and nine par 4s. There are 35 bunkers and six lakes strategically placed to force players to think about every shot. Matt Kalbak, GM & Class A PGA Professional remarks on several of the challenging holes found at Monarch Dunes Golf Club: "The 6th Hole, an uphill 560-yard par 5 is one of the most visually stunning holes on the course. The second shot is critical to your success with water right and a thin finger of fairway to the left that requires a very accurate long iron or fairway metal. #6 is the first of five holes where the large ridge running through the center of the course comes into play." "The difficult Par 4, 470 yard, 9th Hole has trouble right & left. The hole starts off from an elevated tee where an accurate drive is a must to avoid the hazards that flank both side of the fairway – a lake on the right and a large bunker on the left. The approach shot demands a long carry over the lake and is possibly the most challenging on the course." "The par 4 10th hole features a split fairway — a risk-reward depending on which side of the fairway is taken. The 180-yard par-three 11th hole treats players to a striking ocean view over the Oso Flaco wetlands, beyond the reversed-tiered green that runs away from front to back." "The 13th hole is a 423-yard par 4 that personifies the links-style feel of the entire course. The tee shot plays down hill to a wide landing area into the prevailing left to right wind. The semi blind approach shot plays to a green that is fronted by a large dune that ends 40 yards from the green – it is a challenging mid to long iron depending on the strength of the wind."
